Atheist Week at the University of Auckland
2nd-6th August
The Reason and Science Club is holding Atheist Week at the University of Auckland.
Atheist Week is a week of events supporting a naturalistic view of the universe - the view that the world we live in can be explained by science and reason where it can be explained at all. The naturalistic worldview involves critically evaluating religion and the supernatural. The event is not just about atheism, but appeals to non-believers and skeptics. The organisers would like to engage with the religious and believers in the supernatural to present them with alternative views and the reasons for holding them and hear their response to this.
Planned events (details still pending):
- Monday 6-7 pm, OGGB 4, Owen G Glenn building: "Religion is owed no respect, but should we tolerate it?" - a talk by philosophy professor Robert Nola
- Monday 7-9 pm at "The Centennial" 260 - 098 Owen G Glenn Building: Raymond Bradley vs. Matthew Flannagan debate the question "is God the source of morality?"
- Tuesday 5-7 pm at Library Basement - Lib B10: Biologist Kendall Clements presents the evidence for evolution and explains why intelligent design isn't.
- Wednesday 1-3 pm at PLT2, Maths & Physics building: A discussion about views of Jesus between Christian and atheist students
- Wednesday 6-8 pm at Library Basement - Lib B10: Richard Dawkins - A replay of his sold out talk at the University of Auckland which many missed out on (1 hr), plus his interviews with Brian Boyd (35 mins), and plenty of time for Q&A. Brian Boyd and others will be there to take questions.
- Thursday 6-7:30 pm at Library Basement - Lib B10: Screening of the "The God Who Wasn't There", a 2005 independent documentary which questions the existence of Jesus (60 minutes), hopefully Q&A/discussion after.
- Friday 6-7 pm at Library Basement - Lib B15: Debating the moot "Which is the one true God: The Flying Spaghetti Monster or the Invisible Pink Unicorn?"
